Where it came from
The Gunsmith Cats OVA series was released in 1995, based on the long-running manga by Kenichi Sonoda. Produced by Studio OLM, the project sought to translate Sonoda's detailed depictions of American firearms and high-speed car chases into a high-octane animation format. The series was deeply influenced by the creator's personal enthusiasm for Chicago's urban landscape and tactical weaponry, resulting in a distinct visual style that prioritized technical accuracy in mechanical design.
Upon its release, the three-episode OVA was well-received for its polished animation and faithful adherence to the source material's gritty, action-oriented tone. The production is widely regarded as a quintessential example of 1990s anime craftsmanship, noted for its emphasis on practical effects and character-driven dynamics within a pulp-noir setting. It remains a notable touchstone for fans of the 'hard-boiled' subgenre of manga and anime adaptation.
