Where it came from
Hacka Doll originated in 2014 as a personalized news curation application developed by DeNA. The project sought to streamline information consumption for niche interests, utilizing the anthropomorphic 'Hacka Dolls'—numbered agents 1 through 3—to organize and deliver content to the user. This digital identity was soon expanded into a multimedia franchise to build brand affinity, leading to the production of a short-form anime series by Studio TRIGGER.
The character designs were crafted to reflect the high-energy, irreverent aesthetic for which Studio TRIGGER is known. The series was designed as a meta-commentary on otaku culture and the internet information age, characterized by rapid-fire pacing and self-deprecating humor. While the app itself has since ceased operations, the characters remain recognized for their distinctive visual style and the studio’s contribution to late-night experimental animation programming.
