The characters from previous .hack//G.U. Games and .hack//Roots receive an email from Ovan. He is requesting them to go to Hidden Forbidden Festival where is set up a mysterious summer festival. There they find an AIDA Chim Chim who wishes to peacefully co-exist with the other players of The World. It then transforms into the word "Returner", so they assume it to mean that Ovan will return to The World.

Where it came from
Released in 2007, .hack//G.U. Returner serves as a brief epilogue to the .hack//G.U. video game trilogy developed by CyberConnect2. Produced by the studio Bee Train, this original video animation was designed to bridge the narrative gap between the conclusion of the G.U. games and the later .hack//Link title, offering players a final glimpse into the lives of protagonists Haseo and Atoli within the digital landscape of The World.
The production maintains the aesthetic continuity established by the series' long-standing collaboration between director Koichi Mashimo and the broader .hack franchise team. By focusing on the reflective, post-conflict experiences of the core cast, the OVA was intended to provide closure for fans of the trilogy. While it was received primarily as a niche supplementary piece for dedicated players, it remains a notable example of the multimedia expansion strategy that defined the .hack series throughout the 2000s.
