While playing the newly released MMORPG ‘The World’, Minase Mai and Tomonari Kasumi collapsed in the real world and were sent to the hospital after hearing a mysterious sound. Only Mai had recovered while her friend Kasumi had slipped into a mysterious coma. Mai is later approached by the creator of ‘The World’, Tokuoka Junichiro, who unveils to her that, just like her friend, six other players across the country had also collapsed while playing ‘The World’ and are now in mysterious comas. What exactly is ‘The World’, what is this mysterious sound Mai keeps on hearing, and why are people slipping into comas from this game? Minase, Junichiro and their acquaintances set off to get to the bottom of this problem before any further harm happens.

Where it came from
Released in 2002 alongside the video game series .hack//Infection, .hack//Liminality is a four-part original video animation series produced by Bee Train. Unlike the companion series .hack//SIGN, which explores the virtual environment of 'The World,' Liminality is set in the real world. It was designed to provide a grounded, psychological counterbalance to the fantasy setting of the games, illustrating the physical-world ramifications of the players falling into comas after encountering mysterious anomalies within the game's servers.
The series was directed by Koichi Mashimo, a frequent collaborator with Bandai Visual on the .hack franchise. The aesthetic choices lean into a muted, realistic urban tone, deliberately contrasting with the vibrant, high-fantasy visuals found in the games and the other anime adaptations. Upon its release, it was well-received for its narrative ambition, specifically for how it wove transmedia storytelling techniques to make the video game’s lore feel connected to tangible human stakes.
