Where it came from
Released in 2011 as a three-part original video animation series, .hack//Quantum served as a standalone entry in the long-running multimedia franchise centered on the fictional MMORPG known as The World. Produced by the studio Kinema Citrus for Bandai Visual, the project sought to distill the core themes of the series—the blurred boundary between online play and personal reality—into a condensed, high-stakes narrative focused on a trio of players caught in a mysterious, reality-warping glitch.
The character designs were handled by Koji Omiya, who aimed to maintain the series' signature aesthetic while transitioning the visuals to a modern, crisp animation style suited for the high-definition format of the early 2010s. Upon its release, the series was received as a technically polished addition to the .hack canon, praised by fans of the franchise for its fast-paced action sequences and its ability to capture the atmosphere of virtual gaming communities without requiring extensive knowledge of the more sprawling entries in the series.
