Where it came from
Hagane Orchestra originated as a multimedia project centered on a smartphone game developed by Fanworks and published by Qualia. The anime television series, released in 2016, was designed as a series of short-form episodes intended to promote the game's unique mechanical aesthetic and world-building. Directed by Masahiro Katō, the production embraced a distinct aesthetic that merged dieselpunk elements with chibi-style character designs, emphasizing a blend of fast-paced action and quirky humor.
The series was characterized by its unconventional production process, often reflecting a meta-commentary on the difficulties of small-scale game and animation development. Fanworks aimed to capture a specific niche audience by leaning into the charm of DIY-style storytelling and self-aware comedy. While the project served primarily as a creative vehicle for the associated mobile game, the series was noted for its experimental pacing and was received as a cult curiosity within the 2016 seasonal anime lineup.
