Haguregumo

Haguregumo, released in 1982, is a feature-length animated film produced by the renowned Studio Madhouse. It is based on the long-running manga series by George Akiyama, which began serialization in 1973. The narrative follows the titular character, a wandering, free-spirited man living during the late Edo period, whose carefree and unconventional approach to life often clashes with the rigid social structures of his time.

The film was directed by Tsutomu Shibayama and was noted for its faithful adaptation of Akiyama's distinct, somewhat grotesque, and evocative art style. The project was conceived as part of a wave of experimental and mature-themed animated works produced in Japan during the early 1980s. Upon its release, the film was recognized for its philosophical underpinnings and its departure from the standard heroic tropes typical of the era's animated storytelling.
