Ham

Ham, a chimpanzee born in the French Cameroons, was selected by the United States Air Force and NASA as the subject for Project Mercury's biological suborbital test flight. Launched on January 31, 1961, aboard the Mercury-Redstone 2 mission, Ham was trained to perform simple tasks in response to light signals. His successful return to Earth proved that complex tasks could be performed during spaceflight, effectively clearing the way for Alan Shepard to become the first American in space.

The mission design centered on evaluating the life-support systems of the Mercury capsule under flight conditions. While the capsule experienced technical issues that caused it to overshoot its splashdown target, Ham emerged from the mission in good health. The flight was highly publicized at the time as a triumph of the burgeoning space race, serving as a critical step in testing the reliability of the Redstone launch vehicle and the capsule's automated systems.
