Halved

Halved, a work by the conceptual artist Damien Hirst, emerged from his iconic Natural History series which gained international prominence during the 1990s. The piece continues Hirst's exploration of life, death, and the fragile boundary between the two by suspending a biological specimen in formaldehyde. By bisecting the subject, Hirst forces the viewer to confront the internal anatomy of a creature usually seen only from the exterior, challenging traditional notions of taxidermy and scientific preservation.

The design of the work relies on the clinical, minimalist aesthetic of industrial steel and glass to juxtapose the organic chaos of the specimen within. Hirst's intent was to strip away the mystery of the living animal, presenting it as a formal object that remains both grotesque and strangely beautiful. The series was met with polarized critical reception, often sparking intense public debate regarding the ethics of using animal carcasses as art, yet it remains a cornerstone of the Young British Artists movement that redefined contemporary British art at the end of the 20th century.
