Provenance

Where it came from

Harlock Saga: The Ring of the Nibelung was produced in 1999 as a direct-to-video OVA series, based on the manga by legendary creator Leiji Matsumoto. The project was conceived as an ambitious reimagining of Richard Wagner’s opera cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung, transposed into the space-faring universe of Captain Harlock. Matsumoto sought to blend his signature melancholic aesthetic with the grandiose scale of Norse mythology, reflecting his long-standing fascination with classical European operatic themes.

The series is notable for its utilization of computer-generated imagery alongside traditional animation, a stylistic choice that aimed to modernize the visual language of the Harlock franchise. Produced by Bandai Visual, the project received a mixed reception from long-time fans who found the departure from the traditional 1970s animation style jarring. Despite the polarizing visual approach, the series remains an important entry in the Matsumoto canon, illustrating his career-long effort to synthesize sci-fi adventure with deep, philosophical introspection.
