Where it came from
Harmagedon, released in 1983, stands as a landmark project for Studio Madhouse, marking one of the earliest high-profile collaborations between Japanese animation studios and international talent. Based on the expansive manga series by Kazumasa Hirai and Shotaro Ishinomori, the film was conceived as a grand, apocalyptic science fiction epic, reflecting the trend of 'big-budget' anime spectacles that gained traction in the early 1980s.
The film is particularly noted for the involvement of legendary manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo, who provided character designs. Otomo’s distinct, gritty aesthetic brought a grounded sensibility to the psychic-powered, cosmic scale of the narrative. Upon release, the film was recognized for its ambitious, fluid animation and experimental visual sequences, which helped solidify the reputation of the burgeoning studio as a pioneer in cinematic, mature-oriented animation.
