Have a Nice Day

Have a Nice Day, released in 2017 and titled Petit Paysan in its original French, is a psychological drama directed by Hubert Charuel. The film originated from a deeply personal place for Charuel, who grew up on a dairy farm; he chose to cast his own parents in the film and utilized his family's actual farm as the primary set to lend an authentic, lived-in texture to the narrative. The story follows a young dairy farmer who becomes increasingly isolated and desperate as he attempts to save his herd from an outbreak of a cattle epidemic.

The film's design and visual language emphasize claustrophobia and the mounting pressure of agricultural life. Charuel’s direction, paired with the gritty, naturalistic cinematography, aims to portray the visceral stakes of farming rather than a romanticized version of the countryside. Upon its release, the film was well-received by critics for its taut, suspenseful tone—often compared to a thriller—and its raw emotional honesty regarding the plight of modern French farmers.
