Where it came from
Hayate no Gotoku!!: Atsu ga Natsuize - Mizugi-hen! was produced by studio J.C.Staff as a standalone original video animation, released in 2009. It serves as a lighthearted expansion of the Hayate the Combat Butler franchise, moving away from the overarching plot of the television series to focus on a summer-themed, comedic romp centered on the main characters at a beach resort.
The animation reflects the aesthetic established during the show’s second season, focusing on high-energy slapstick and character-driven gags typical of the era's harem comedies. By centering the narrative on the trope of a beach vacation, the studio aimed to provide fans with a playful, low-stakes episode that highlighted the ensemble cast's established dynamics in a sun-drenched, visually distinct environment.
