Where it came from
Hayan Ma-eum Baeggu, known internationally as Heart of White, is a seminal South Korean television drama first broadcast in the 1980s. The series centers on the bond between a young boy and his loyal dog, Baeggu, a Jindo breed. Produced during a period when domestic television was increasingly focusing on emotional and family-oriented storytelling, the show became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of canine devotion and the resilience of the rural family unit.
The series gained significant acclaim for its naturalistic depiction of the relationship between the child protagonist and the animal actor. Unlike many contemporary productions that relied on heavy artifice, the direction emphasized the authentic interactions between the two, which resonated deeply with audiences navigating the rapid modernization of the era. It remains a classic of the genre, frequently cited in discussions regarding the history of South Korean television and its capacity to evoke collective nostalgia.
