Heisei Harenchi Gakuen

Heisei Harenchi Gakuen was released in 1996 by the studio Pink Pineapple as an original video animation series. It serves as a modern revival of Go Nagai’s seminal 1968 manga, Harenchi Gakuen, which famously pushed the boundaries of postwar Japanese social norms through its irreverent and provocative schoolroom comedy. By adapting the material for the 1990s OVA market, Pink Pineapple sought to capitalize on the nostalgia for Nagai's classic work while updating the visual style to reflect contemporary animation trends of the era.

The production leans heavily into the slapstick and transgressive humor that defined the original franchise. While Go Nagai’s early work was revolutionary for its time, this mid-90s iteration is primarily recognized by genre enthusiasts for its place within the historical context of the OVA boom, which allowed for niche adaptations that pushed content restrictions. It remains a notable, if polarizing, chapter in the history of Nagai’s influence on manga and anime adaptations.
