Somewhere in the vast sea of the Internet, there's a website that can only be accessed at the stroke of midnight. Known as the Jigoku Tsushin, rumor has it that if you post a grudge there, the Jigoku Shoujo will appear and drag whoever torments you into the inferno. Very little is known about the girl - all we know for sure is that she lives with her equally enigmatic grandmother, that three magical straw dolls accompany and serve her, and that whenever a posting on the Jigoku Tsushin moves her, she becomes the Jigoku Shoujo.

Where it came from
Hell Girl, known in Japan as Jigoku Shoujo, premiered in 2005 as an original dark fantasy anime produced by Aniplex and animated by Studio Deen. The series centers on the concept of a website that only appears at midnight, allowing users to send their enemies to hell through a contract with the titular character, Ai Enma. It emerged during a period of rising interest in supernatural and psychological anime, drawing inspiration from folklore and modern urban legends about the internet's capacity for malice.
The series was directed by Takahiro Omori, who focused on a slow-burning, episodic structure that explores human morality and the consequences of vengeance. Its aesthetic is characterized by a somber, traditional Japanese atmosphere juxtaposed with digital-age technology. The show was well-received for its atmospheric storytelling and complex ethical dilemmas, ultimately spawning multiple television seasons, a manga adaptation, and a live-action feature film.
