Hell Girl: Fourth Twilight

Hell Girl: Fourth Twilight was produced by Studio DEEN and released in 2017, serving as the fourth installment in the long-running Jigoku Shoujo franchise. The series returned after an eight-year hiatus following the conclusion of the third season, aiming to revisit the atmospheric horror and moral ambiguity that defined the original 2005 series. It maintains the core premise of Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, who facilitates supernatural vengeance for individuals who log onto the legend-steeped Hell Correspondence website at midnight.

The visual design retains the franchise's signature dark, gothic aesthetic, helmed by the returning creative team at Studio DEEN. The series structure blends episodic tales of human malice with a serialized arc focusing on a new character, Michiru, to provide a fresh perspective on the cyclical nature of Ai Enma's existence. While long-term fans welcomed the return to the series' melancholic tone and haunting musical motifs, the reception was largely characterized by a sense of nostalgia, noting the continuity in the show's deliberate, slow-burn psychological storytelling.
