Where it came from
Hello Kitty: Stump Village is a stop-motion animated series produced by Sanrio and released in 2005. The series was developed to expand the Hello Kitty franchise into the tactile, artisan-style aesthetic of claymation, moving away from the traditional 2D animation styles used in earlier Sanrio productions. The show focuses on a peaceful woodland setting where Hello Kitty and her friends interact with their environment, emphasizing themes of friendship and gentle discovery.
The character designs were overseen by Sanrio's creative team, maintaining the iconic minimalist appeal of Yuko Shimizu’s original Hello Kitty concept while adapting the proportions for three-dimensional puppets. By utilizing stop-motion, the series sought to evoke a nostalgic, storybook quality that resonated with a younger demographic. It was received as a charming departure for the brand, praised for its soft color palette and the intricate, hand-crafted look of the village set pieces.
