Where it came from
Hello World was produced by the animation studio Graphinica and released in 2019 as a science fiction romance film. Directed by Tomohiko Ito, the project emerged from a desire to blend traditional 2D character aesthetics with modern 3D CGI environments, a stylistic choice intended to give the film a unique, painterly look that distinguishes it from standard digital animation. The narrative explores themes of memory, simulation, and the lengths one will go to change the past, set against the backdrop of a technologically advanced Kyoto.
The film's visual design was spearheaded by director Ito and characterized by an ambitious integration of digital depth and hand-drawn charm. While the reception was mixed regarding the complexity of its plot, the film was widely noted for its technical experimentation. It served as a significant effort by Graphinica to push the boundaries of how 3D assets could be stylized to evoke the emotional warmth of classical animation techniques.
