Where it came from
Hells, released in 2008 by Studio Madhouse, originated as an adaptation of the manga series Hells Angels by Shinichi Hiromi. The film project was spearheaded by director Yoshiki Yamakawa, who aimed to translate the manga's chaotic, surreal aesthetic into a vibrant visual experience. Set in a version of hell designed as a bizarre high school, the film leans into dark comedy and high-octane action, reflecting the stylistic experimentation common in late 2000s Japanese animation.
The production is notable for its deliberate embrace of a frenetic, retro-inspired visual style that diverges significantly from the hyper-realistic trends of the era. Critics at the time noted its ambitious art direction and offbeat humor, though it remained a niche title compared to more mainstream studio exports. Despite its limited initial distribution, the film has since maintained a dedicated cult following for its unique fusion of surrealism and traditional cel-shaded animation sensibilities.
