The Edo period is nearing its end. Gabimaru, a shinobi formerly known as the strongest in Iwagakure who is now a death row convict, is told that he will be acquitted and set free if he can bring back the Elixir of Life from an island that is rumored to be the Buddhist pure land Sukhavati. In hopes of reuniting with his beloved wife, Gabimaru heads to the island along with the executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. Upon arriving there, they encounter other death row convicts in search of the Elixir of Life... as well as a host of unknown creatures, eerie manmade statues, and the hermits who rule the island. Can Gabimaru find the Elixir of Life on this mysterious island and make it back home alive?

Where it came from
Hell's Paradise, known in Japan as Jigokuraku, originated as a manga series by Yuji Kaku, serialized on the Shonen Jump+ platform starting in 2018. The narrative follows Gabimaru the Hollow, an elite ninja facing execution who is offered a pardon if he can retrieve a fabled elixir of life from a mysterious, perilous island. The story is noted for its juxtaposition of grotesque, surreal imagery and tender emotional themes, drawing inspiration from diverse folkloric and historical influences.
The 2023 anime adaptation was produced by the studio MAPPA and directed by Kaori Makita. Aiming to capture the intricate, unsettling beauty of Kaku’s original artwork, the series utilized a vibrant color palette to highlight the haunting contrast between the lush, paradisiacal scenery and the violent horrors inhabiting the island. Upon its release, the adaptation was well-received for its atmospheric world-building and the faithful translation of the source material's intense action sequences and philosophical undertones.
