A spaceship is lost near the forbidden planet of Inferno II. Some years later, a second ship with a crew of nine gets there and encounters a monster that rapidly makes mince meat of most of them. Where it came from
Hell Target was released in 1987 as an original video animation, a format that flourished in Japan during the mid-eighties as a way for studios to produce niche, adult-oriented, or experimental content outside the constraints of television broadcast standards. Produced by Nakamura Production, the title emerged during a period of intense creative output for the studio, which was heavily involved in providing animation services for high-profile projects throughout the decade.
The visual direction and character designs reflect the dark, gritty aesthetic common in the late-show OVA market of the late 1980s. While not a commercial titan, the piece serves as a characteristic example of the era's focus on dystopian themes and hyper-stylized action sequences, often prioritized by studios like Nakamura to showcase technical fluidity in a medium that was rapidly finding its footing in the home video market.
