Where it came from
Henbe was produced by the Japanese animation studio Kumarba and aired in 1989. The series belongs to a genre of children's fantasy anime that was popular in the late 1980s, often centered on the friendship between a child and a magical, otherworldly creature. It follows the story of a young girl named Yuki who encounters a mysterious, round, and mischievous being named Henbe, leading to various supernatural adventures in their daily lives.
The character design for the show leans into the characteristic soft, rounded aesthetics prevalent in family-oriented television animation of that era. Designed to be accessible and endearing to a young demographic, the animation style focuses on expressive, simple character shapes and whimsical settings. While the series remains a niche entry in the landscape of late 80s anime, it is remembered by enthusiasts as a classic example of the lighthearted, episodic storytelling format that defined the programming blocks of the time.
