Shoko and Maiko Ougi are apparently two ordinary schoolgirls in pursuit of graduating and having fun. Shii-chan is the more serious while Mai-chan is more fun-loving. In reality, the two sisters are powerful exorcists from the Karura temple. Each wields half the power...Shii-chan can "see" the spirits, and Mai-chan can banish them. This is the movie adaptation of a spooky series with heavy emphasis on traditionally Japanese occult themes.

Where it came from
Hengen Taima Yakou Karura Mau! Nara Onryou Emaki, released in 1989, is an original video animation (OVA) adaptation based on the popular occult-themed light novel series written by Minoru Kawasaki. Produced during the late 1980s surge in dark fantasy and supernatural anime, the film capitalizes on the period's fascination with traditional Japanese folklore blended with contemporary horror elements. It follows the protagonist Shouhou, a priest of the Shingon sect, as he investigates supernatural disturbances in Nara.
The animation features a distinct visual style characteristic of the late-Showa and early-Heisei transition, prioritizing atmospheric dread and detailed, often macabre, character designs. The production was helmed by the studio Mushi Production, which sought to translate the intricate supernatural lore of the novels into a kinetic, filmic medium. While it remains a niche title today, it is frequently cited by collectors for its contribution to the boom of occult-focused horror anime that defined the direct-to-video market of that era.
