Shoko and Maiko Ougi are apparently two ordinary schoolgirls in pursuit of graduating and having fun. Shii-chan is the more serious while Mai-chan is more fun-loving. In reality, the two sisters are powerful exorcists from the Karura temple. Each wields half the power... Shii-chan can "see" the spirits, and Mai-chan can banish them. This is a spooky series with heavy emphasis on traditionally Japanese occult themes.

Where it came from
Hengen Taima Yakou Karura Mau! Sendai Kokeshi Onka was released in 1990 as an original video animation produced by Studio Ginga Teikoku. The project was part of a broader multimedia expansion of the Karura Mau franchise, which originated from the supernatural novel series written by Minoru Kawasaki. The adaptation sought to translate the manga's atmospheric blend of occult mythology and traditional Japanese folklore into the visual medium of the burgeoning OVA market of the late eighties and early nineties.
The character designs and animation direction reflected the distinct aesthetic style favored by Ginga Teikoku during this period, focusing on a dark, mystical tone intended to differentiate the series from more mainstream action-oriented anime. While the production was aimed at a niche demographic of fans interested in supernatural horror, its reception was tempered by the high volume of similar genre titles being released simultaneously, leading the series to remain a specialized entry within the wider Karura Mau catalog.
