Where it came from
Her was written and directed by Spike Jonze and released in 2013, emerging from a period of increasing public discourse regarding the intersection of human intimacy and evolving artificial intelligence. Jonze developed the script as an exploration of the emotional distance people experience despite being hyper-connected through technology, opting for a near-future setting that felt grounded rather than dystopian. The production design, led by K.K. Barrett, utilized a muted, warm color palette and mid-century modern aesthetic influences to create a world that felt approachable and lived-in.
The film's visual identity was heavily shaped by its soft, golden-hued cinematography and costume design, which eschewed traditional futuristic tropes like metallic surfaces or neon lighting. Joaquin Phoenix’s high-waisted trousers and the film's gentle, tactile environments were intentional choices meant to emphasize vulnerability. Upon its release, Her was widely praised by critics for its empathetic tone and performance, ultimately winning the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and cementing its status as a seminal entry in the speculative romance genre.
