Hi no Ame ga Furu

Hi no Ame ga Furu, or Rain of Fire, was produced by Mushi Production in 1988 as a significant anti-war anime film. Commissioned by the Hiroshima City government, the project was designed to educate younger generations about the harrowing realities of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The production team aimed for a somber, documentary-style approach, eschewing typical animation tropes to ensure the historical weight of the testimony remained the focus of the narrative.

The film is notable for its incorporation of actual drawings created by survivors of the blast, which were integrated into the animation to provide a haunting, authentic perspective on the catastrophe. By blending these personal accounts with traditional cel animation, the studio sought to bridge the gap between abstract history and individual tragedy. Upon its release, it was widely recognized as a poignant pedagogical tool and a staple of Japanese peace education efforts, praised for its solemn commitment to historical preservation.
