Hinomaru Hatanosuke: Inazuma-gumi Tobatsu no Maki

Hinomaru Hatanosuke: Inazuma-gumi Tobatsu no Maki, released in 1934, stands as a notable example of early Japanese animation. It features the character Hinomaru Hatanosuke, a samurai protagonist who became a recurring figure in short films produced during the 1930s. These works were typically created as entertainment shorts for domestic audiences, reflecting the stylistic influence of both traditional Japanese woodblock art and the burgeoning global animation techniques of the era.

The film was produced during a period when Japanese animation was heavily focused on jidaigeki, or period dramas. The design of the characters often utilized bold, expressive lines to convey action and humor, fitting the episodic nature of the films. While these shorts were widely exhibited in Japanese theaters during their time, the survival of physical prints has been limited, leading to their current status as significant, albeit rare, historical artifacts within the study of pre-war Japanese cinema.
