Where it came from
Hidamari Sketch × 365 Tokubetsu-hen was released in 2009 as a two-episode special, serving as an extension to the second season of the anime adaptation of Ume Aoki's four-panel manga series. Produced by Studio Shaft under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo, the special continues to follow the daily lives of art students living at the Hidamari Apartments. It was created to satisfy demand for more content following the conclusion of the 365-day arc, maintaining the series' signature aesthetic and focus on the mundane, gentle interactions of its central characters.
The visual identity of this production is heavily influenced by the distinct directorial style of Akiyuki Shinbo and the creative output of Studio Shaft, characterized by unconventional framing, vibrant color palettes, and experimental transition sequences. This stylistic approach was intended to elevate the source material's slice-of-life nature into a surreal, highly stylized viewing experience. Upon its release, the special was well-received by the existing fan base for successfully translating the manga's soft, comedic tone while further refining the studio’s idiosyncratic visual language.
