High School Fleet Movie

The High School Fleet Movie, released in 2020, serves as the direct cinematic continuation of the 2016 television anime series created by Takaaki Suzuki. Produced by A-1 Pictures, the film expands upon the narrative established in the original series, which explored the lives of young women training as 'Blue Mermaids'—an elite maritime defense force tasked with protecting the world's oceans. The production sought to elevate the stakes of the franchise, shifting from the episodic structure of the television show to a feature-length dramatic mission that tests the leadership and camaraderie of the Harekaze crew.

The film maintains the franchise's emphasis on naval technical detail, reflecting the creative influence of Takaaki Suzuki, a noted military consultant known for his commitment to authentic hardware depiction in anime. Character designs were handled by Naoto Nakamura, who adapted the original aesthetic developed by Atto to suit the larger scale of the theatrical medium. While the series initially garnered attention for its juxtaposition of lighthearted maritime academy tropes with serious naval conflict, the film was received by the fanbase as a grounded conclusion to the Harekaze's journey, praised for its improved animation quality and commitment to the established technical lore.
