Hikoichi and Osato, who are selling the many watermelons they harvested, in front of the castle, happen to meet a chief counselor named Chuemon. Chuemon was at his wits end because a messenger from a neighboring country had come to him with an unreasonable demand and he was looking for someone wise and intelligent to help him. Hikoichi agrees to help him, on the condition that Chuemon buys all of the watermelons if Hikoichi can win a battle of wits. Hikoichi makes seemingly impossible problems possible using his wits and unconventional methods. This drama rhythmically progresses with wisdom and courage.
This film won Gold in the Tokyo Educational Film Competition.

Where it came from
Hikoichi Tonchi Banashi is a collection of animated short films produced by Gakken, a Japanese publishing and educational media company. Released as part of their instructional and cultural series, these shorts adapt the traditional folklore of Hikoichi, a legendary clever boy from Yatsushiro in Kumamoto Prefecture known for his quick wit and ability to outsmart local officials through wordplay and clever schemes.
The animation reflects the pedagogical style typical of Gakken’s 1970s and 1980s output, which often sought to preserve Japanese cultural heritage for younger audiences. The design choices prioritize clarity and narrative accessibility, utilizing a straightforward aesthetic that emphasizes the folkloric roots of the stories rather than high-concept stylistic innovation. These works were widely distributed to libraries and educational institutions, where they served as standard viewing for children learning about regional morality tales.
