Where it came from
Himouto! Umaru-chanS refers to the series of original video animation (OVA) specials released alongside the 2015 anime adaptation of Sankaku Head's popular manga. Produced by studio Doga Kobo, these shorts were designed to extend the comedic premise of the series, focusing on the titular character Umaru Doma and her double life as a refined high school student and a slothful, cola-drinking otaku. The animation maintains the same vibrant, chibi-heavy aesthetic as the main series, emphasizing the contrast between her public persona and her private, hooded-cape-wearing habits.
The production sought to lean further into the lighthearted, episodic nature of the source material, providing additional character-driven gags that did not fit into the primary broadcast narrative. Doga Kobo, known for their proficiency in the slice-of-life and comedy genres, utilized these specials to highlight the interplay between Umaru and her brother Taihei. Upon release, the segments were well-received by fans of the original manga for successfully capturing the playful, chaotic energy that defined the Himouto! Umaru-chan franchise.
