High-school beauty Umaru seems like the perfect teen wunderkind, but she's hiding a shocking double life. As soon as she gets home, she becomes a junk-food-inhaling, soda-guzzling, video-game-addicted slob. The only one who sees this unsavory side of Umaru is her beleaguered older brother Taihei, who does his best to keep up with his work while trying to get his little sister to behave like a decent member of society. As she makes new friends and gets into a number of wacky situations, Umaru will continue to fight for her right to stay up all night binging potato chips and anime.

Where it came from
Himouto! Umaru-chan R serves as the second season of the anime adaptation based on the popular manga series by Sankaku Head. Produced by Doga Kobo and released in 2017, the series continues the comedic exploration of Umaru Doma, a high school student who maintains a flawless public persona while transforming into a slothful, soda-drinking homebody in private. The production team aimed to retain the vibrant, high-energy aesthetic of the first season while deepening the character dynamics among Umaru’s small social circle.
The series is characterized by its distinct visual shorthand, particularly the 'chibi' super-deformed design of Umaru when she is at home, which became a cultural touchstone for anime fans. Directed by Masahiko Ohta, the production emphasizes situational comedy and the contrast between domestic escapism and societal expectations. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted continuation of the source material, praised by fans for its relatable themes of gaming culture and sibling relationships, though it remains a niche entry within the slice-of-life genre.
