HINAMATSURI

Hinamatsuri was produced by studio feel. and aired in 2018 as a television adaptation of the long-running manga series by Masao Ohtake. The story centers on a member of the yakuza whose life is upended when a mysterious, superpowered girl named Hina appears in his apartment, blending elements of absurdist comedy with surprisingly grounded domestic themes. The production aimed to maintain the deadpan humor and tonal shifts of the source material, navigating the contrast between high-stakes psychic action and the mundane struggles of its characters.

Director Kei Oikawa led the adaptation, focusing on timing and character expression to capture the manga's specific brand of cynical comedy. The series received positive attention from critics and viewers for its tight pacing and the distinct chemistry between the main characters, which helped it stand out in a season crowded with more traditional genre fare. Its reception established it as a notable example of contemporary comedy-drama in anime, praised for how it balanced its fantastical premise with genuine emotional resonance.
