It is a divine ritual, a martial art, a combat sport—it's sumo!!
A "small" new student, Ushio Hinomaru, appears before the weak little sumo club of Oodachi High School! The words "big" and "heavy" are the rules to this sport, which does not fit this newbie any inch, but this guy goes and does what...!? Ushio and the small sumo club climbs its way to the top!
The goal is Hinoshita Kaisan (A title for the highest rank in professional sumo, equivalent of Yokozuna)!
A fired up high school sumo tale—no retakes allowed!!

Where it came from
Hinomaru Sumo, or Hinomaru Zumō, is a 2018 anime adaptation based on the sports manga series written and illustrated by Kawada. Produced by the studio GONZO, the series was created to translate the high-stakes, intense atmosphere of traditional professional sumo wrestling into a shonen action format. The narrative focuses on Hinomaru Ushio, a physically undersized but incredibly skilled wrestler striving to reach the top rank of Yokozuna, serving as a subversion of typical sports anime tropes regarding height and natural advantage.
The production design reflects the studio's focus on conveying kinetic, visceral energy during wrestling matches. While GONZO is historically recognized for ambitious and experimental projects, this series aimed for a grounded approach to the technical nuances of the sport, incorporating actual sumo techniques and training regimens. The show was released during a resurgence of interest in sports-themed animation, receiving moderate critical attention for its dedication to the lore of sumo rather than relying solely on supernatural elements common in the genre.
