Where it came from
Hi no Tori: Dogo Onsen-hen was commissioned in 2019 by the Dogo Onsen hot spring resort in Matsuyama, Japan, as part of a multi-year promotional campaign to revitalize the historic site. The ONA serves as a modern extension of Osamu Tezuka’s legendary Phoenix manga series, aiming to weave the spiritual and historical significance of the oldest hot spring in Japan into the thematic framework of the original source material.
The animation was produced by Tezuka Productions under the creative guidance of director Shinji Higuchi. The aesthetic choices lean into the foundational motifs of the Phoenix, focusing on themes of rebirth, eternity, and the intersection of human history with the divine. Upon its release, it was praised for its respectful integration of local folklore with the distinct visual legacy of the Tezuka estate, successfully drawing attention to the site's preservation efforts.
