Where it came from
Hipira-kun was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Sunrise and released in 2009. It is based on a children's picture book created by author Katsuhiro Otomo, famous for Akira, and illustrator Shinji Kimura, known for his work on Steamboy and Nightmare Before Christmas. The series captures the dark yet whimsical aesthetic of the original book, set in a city of vampires called Salta.
The animation style is highly distinct, utilizing a unique 3D CGI process that mimics the texture and appearance of stop-motion puppets to align with Kimura's illustrative style. The series was designed for a younger audience, offering a gothic, atmospheric take on the supernatural genre, and was received as a stylish, albeit niche, entry in Sunrise’s expansive catalog of experimental short-form projects.
