Hirano to Kagiura is being adapted as an accompanying animated short with the Sasaki to Miyano: Sotsugyou-hen movie.
Hirano, a second-year in high school, lives in a dormitory on his campus and has recently become roommates with Kagiura, a first-year. Kagiura is a hard-working student on the basketball team, though he does have difficulty getting up in the morning, leaving Hirano to be his support system in that regard. They get along great, and Hirano is very fond of his earnest, straight-forward roommate. What he doesn’t know? Kagiura is pretty much head over heels in love with him.
Note: This special played before the Sasaki to Miyano: Sotsugyou-hen movie in theaters and as streaming on Crunchyroll.

Where it came from
Hirano to Kagiura originated as a spin-off manga series by Sho Harusono, expanding on the relationship between two supporting characters from her popular boys' love work, Sasaki and Miyano. Following the success of the 2022 television anime adaptation of the main series, Studio DEEN produced this special episode in 2023, which adapts the 'Hirano and Kagiura' manga volume. The narrative focuses on the maturing dynamic between the stoic senior Hirano and the devoted junior basketball player Kagiura as they navigate their evolving feelings while living together.
Studio DEEN maintained the aesthetic continuity of the previous adaptation, utilizing a soft, character-driven visual style that emphasizes the quiet, domestic intimacy central to Harusono's storytelling. The production was designed to bridge the gap between the existing anime series and the ongoing manga timeline, receiving a positive reception from the established fanbase who sought deeper insight into the couple's development. By focusing on the nuances of their daily life, the production team aimed to capture the gentle, slow-burn emotional growth that defines the source material.
