Where it came from
His and Her Circumstances, known in Japan as Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, was produced by Gainax and directed by Hideaki Anno in 1998. Following the intense psychological exploration of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Anno turned his attention to the shojo manga series by Masami Tsuda. The series was created to offer a grounded, experimental take on the high school romantic comedy genre, utilizing mixed-media techniques and minimalist animation to reflect the internal states of its protagonists.
The series is noted for its stylistic departure from traditional animation, incorporating live-action photographs, storyboard sketches, and idiosyncratic camera angles to emphasize the artifice of the characters' social personas. While the production faced creative friction between the director and the original manga author that resulted in Anno stepping down before the final episodes, the show remains a landmark for its bold visual language and its sincere, often sharp-witted portrayal of teenage social dynamics.
