Where it came from
Hiroshima ni Ichiban Densha ga Hashitta, or The First Streetcar in Hiroshima, was produced by Studio Madhouse in 1993 as an animated film dedicated to the memory of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The story centers on the real-life resilience of the Hiroshima Electric Railway, which managed to restore tram service just three days after the explosion on August 6, 1945. It serves as both a historical record and a message of peace, intended to educate younger generations about the city's reconstruction and the indomitable spirit of its citizens.
The production sought to balance the harrowing reality of the disaster with an uplifting narrative of recovery. Directed by Masatoshi Suzuki, the film adopts a delicate, somber aesthetic common to Japanese historical animation of the 1990s, focusing on humanizing the tragedy through the perspective of the transit workers. While it remains a niche entry in the catalogue of war-themed anime, it is highly regarded within Japan as a poignant educational tool and a significant piece of local cultural heritage, frequently screened in commemorative contexts.
