Where it came from
Produced by Nippon Animation in 1979, Hit and Run stands as a distinctive entry within the studio's extensive history of animation during the late twentieth century. As a standalone special, it reflects the studio's mid-career pivot toward experimental storytelling and shorter formats, moving away from the sprawling, multi-episode narratives of their famous World Masterpiece Theater series. This production emerged during a period when Japanese animation studios were increasingly seeking to showcase technical versatility through unique, self-contained narratives designed for television broadcast.
The creative direction behind this special focused on character-driven sequences and the fluid, emotive art style that became a hallmark of Nippon Animation's output. By utilizing the seasoned talent pool that worked on major projects like Anne of Green Gables, the production team aimed to imbue this short project with a refined aesthetic and a grounded, humanistic tone. While it remains a niche piece compared to the studio's long-running series, it is historically regarded as a testament to the high production values maintained by the studio during this prolific creative window.
