Where it came from
Houkago no Ouji-sama, or After-School of the Prince, was released in 2014 as an original video animation series based on the long-running manga spin-off of the same name. Produced by Production I.G, the series was designed to offer a humorous, lighthearted departure from the intense tennis matches of the main Prince of Tennis franchise. It focuses on the daily lives and comedic interactions of the characters during their downtime, providing fans with a more relaxed look at the ensemble cast.
The creative direction sought to lean into the 'chibi' aesthetic and gag-focused storytelling that defined the manga source material. By shifting the focus away from tournament stakes toward character-driven vignettes, the production team aimed to deepen the audience's emotional connection to the individual players. The animation style is intentionally expressive and fluid to accommodate the slapstick humor, and the series was generally well-received by the existing fan base for its ability to balance nostalgic character dynamics with a fresh, comedic tone.
