Housing Complex C

Housing Complex C was produced by studio Akatsuki and released in 2022 as a four-episode horror miniseries for Adult Swim. The project emerged from a desire to blend localized, mundane slice-of-life settings with visceral cosmic horror, focusing on the residents of a low-cost housing complex plagued by increasingly disturbing occurrences. Its production sought to capture a sense of unsettling isolation, utilizing the constraints of the housing facility as a microcosm for both communal tension and ancient, unfolding dread.

The series was directed by Yūji Nara and features character designs that lean into a deceptive simplicity to heighten the impact of its later, more grotesque visual shifts. Upon its reception, the series was noted for its unconventional pacing and bold tonal departures from typical contemporary anime horror. Critics often analyzed its narrative for its deliberate ambiguity and its attempt to synthesize traditional Japanese horror motifs with the specific, tight-knit environment of a municipal housing block.
