Houzi Lao Yue

Houzi Lao Yue, or 'Monkeys Fish for the Moon,' was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1981. It emerged during a prolific period for Chinese animation, which sought to blend traditional folk storytelling with distinctive artistic techniques. The film draws heavily from the classic Chinese fable of the same name, reflecting a broader movement in the studio to revitalize national identity through myth and folktale adaptations.

The film is notable for its use of traditional paper-cut animation, a labor-intensive technique championed by the studio's masters. By utilizing intricate, multi-layered cutouts that were manipulated frame by frame, the designers created a fluid, textured aesthetic that mimics the look of traditional Chinese papercraft. Upon its release, it was recognized for its technical precision and its role in preserving cultural heritage, eventually garnering international attention for its unique visual storytelling style.
