Masterless samurai Akitsu Masanosuke is a skilled and loyal swordsman, but his naïve, diffident nature has more than once caused him to be let go by the lords who employ him. Hungry and desperate, he agrees to become a bodyguard for Yaichi, the charismatic leader of a group calling itself “Five Leaves.” Although disturbed by the gang’s sinister activities, Masa begins to suspect that Yaichi’s motivations are not what they seem. And despite his misgivings, the deeper he’s drawn into the world of the Five Leaves, the more he finds himself fascinated by these devious, mysterious outlaws.

Where it came from
House of Five Leaves was produced by the studio Manglobe and premiered in 2010 as part of Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. Based on the seinen manga series by Natsume Ono, the anime adaptation was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki. The series is set during the Edo period and centers on a shy, wandering ronin who finds himself entangled with a group of sophisticated kidnappers known as the Five Leaves.
The production is noted for its distinctive visual style, which deliberately departs from standard anime aesthetics to mirror the muted, textural quality of Natsume Ono’s original ink-wash-inspired art. By prioritizing atmosphere, slow-burn character development, and a restrained color palette, the series was received by critics as a mature and unconventional period drama that favored psychological nuance over typical action tropes.
