Where it came from
The HUNGRY DAYS: Aoharu ka yo. series began in 2017 as a high-profile promotional campaign for Cup Noodle by Nissin Foods. Created to capture the vitality of youth, the campaign reimagined classic anime like Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Kiki’s Delivery Service as modern Japanese high school students, blending nostalgic iconography with the aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary youth culture.
The series was produced by Tatsunoko Production, with character designs famously helmed by Eisaku Kubonouchi, a manga artist celebrated for his detailed, expressive linework. The campaign received significant critical attention for its innovative use of familiar intellectual properties to resonate with a younger demographic, effectively repositioning the brand as a staple of student life through dynamic animation and a poignant, romanticized vision of the school experience.
