Where it came from
The Greed Island arc was produced by Nippon Animation as a direct continuation of the 1999 Hunter x Hunter television series, released as a series of OVAs between 2003 and 2004. This production served to adapt Yoshihiro Togashi’s complex manga storyline involving a rare, magical video game that functions as a real-world training ground for Nen users, capturing the high-stakes strategy and immersive world-building that defined the series.
The design of the Greed Island OVA stayed faithful to the distinct aesthetic established in the 1999 series, which was known for its slightly grittier, more atmospheric character designs and detailed backgrounds compared to later adaptations. Created under the direction of Yukihiro Matsushita, the animation aimed to translate the intricate rules of the game into a visual format, drawing acclaim from long-term fans for its atmospheric tension and careful adherence to Togashi’s vision of the game's mechanics.
