Where it came from
Ichi, Ni, San, ... is a long-running educational program produced by NHK, Japan's national public broadcaster. Originally conceived to support early childhood education, the series serves as a foundational tool for teaching Japanese children the basic concepts of counting, sequencing, and number recognition. By integrating visual storytelling with repetitive, rhythmic auditory cues, the program aims to make abstract mathematical concepts accessible and engaging for preschool-aged viewers.
The aesthetic design of the series reflects the traditional NHK approach to children’s educational programming, which emphasizes clarity, high-contrast visuals, and approachable, friendly character animations. Over the decades, the series has undergone various updates to its visual style to remain relevant to shifting pedagogical standards while maintaining its core focus on simplicity. It is widely recognized in Japan as a staple of the national educational curriculum, credited with helping generations of children master numeracy through its structured and gentle presentation.
