Idol

Oshi no Ko, often referred to as Idol, originated as a celebrated manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari before being adapted into an anime series by the studio Doga Kobo. The narrative, which premiered in 2023, explores the darker undercurrents of the Japanese entertainment industry through a blend of supernatural thriller and character-driven drama. Doga Kobo was selected for the adaptation due to their reputation for high-quality character animation and a specific visual style that could translate Yokoyari’s intricate, expressive character designs into a compelling animated format.

The series received significant acclaim for its bold tonal shifts and its sophisticated commentary on fame and parasocial relationships. Its visual identity was crafted to contrast the vibrant, hyper-polished aesthetic of the idol industry with the gritty, realistic consequences faced by the protagonists. By maintaining a balance between glossy, high-energy musical sequences and more somber, atmospheric storytelling, Doga Kobo succeeded in capturing the duality inherent in the source material, leading to it becoming one of the most widely discussed animated works of its year.
