IGPX 2, or Immortal Grand Prix, emerged in 2006 as a collaborative effort between Production I.G and Bee Train. Following the success of the initial 2005 micro-series commissioned by Cartoon Network, this full-length series was developed to expand upon the high-speed mecha racing universe. The narrative follows Team Satomi as they compete in a futuristic sport, reflecting the era's fascination with blending high-octane sports drama with traditional mecha aesthetic tropes.

The visual design and animation direction were handled by a team led by Mitsuru Hongo, who aimed to integrate sophisticated 3D computer graphics with traditional 2D character work. The project was notably crafted to appeal to both Japanese audiences and the Western demographic of Toonami, representing a unique bridge between domestic anime styles and international television trends of the mid-2000s. While it maintains a dedicated cult following, the series is primarily remembered for its distinctive approach to competitive racing choreography.
